New facilities on the way By Dan Whitfield New public toilets are to be installed at Hugh Sinclair Park as a result of direct submissions to Hutt City Council from Wainuiomata residents. The facility is part of the Wainuiomata Local Community Plan and has been in discussion for more than five years. The rate payer funded premises is set to cost about $200,000 for this project to be created. Wainuiomata Community Board’s Terry Stallworth says that Wainuiomata has toilets for people to use but none of them are publicly owned toilets. By Dan Whitfield Francis McGreggor had an epic end to her week when DJ Sir-Vere and K.One played a live gig at her home in Wainuiomata on Friday. The local resident won tickets by signing up for a Mai FM competition when members of the radio station’s promotion team were in Wainuiomata earlier this year. Along with about 100 of her friends, Francis tells the Wainuiomata News that she was so excited when she found out she had won; and was even more excited waiting for the two New Zealand headliners to arrive. Mai FM’s project coordinator Rose Rattray says: “The event was epic! We had such an amazing time; DJ Sir-Vere and K.One were so happy to be a part of it and we are so glad we picked such an amazing winner.” Francis says it was an “awesome night.” “It was so cool having them in my backyard... It was such an amazing night,” Francis says. She says it was just like a really big event for family, friends and children to enjoy. Public toilet at park “makes sense” says board member Continued from page 1 He says having a public facility in this location “makes sense” as Hugh Sinclair Park is one of the more popular parks in Wainuiomata, with parents bringing their children to the park to play. Over the past few years, the board had been looking at areas around the Hutt Valley and comparing them to Wainuiomata. Mr Stallworth says places around the Hutt Valley have numerous public toilets, but Wainuiomata had none. “Even Eastbourne, which is smaller than Wainuiomata, has COUNCILLOR: Terry Stallworth a public toilet.”

According to council, Wainuiomata residents had been heavily involved in the decision to have the toilets installed at the park which is located along The Strand. The community board and council had hoped for the facility to be installed ahead of Christmas just gone however, issues had stopped it happening. The toilets are set to be installed and operational by the end of April. As well as new toilets, the area is set to be landscaped and a barbeque installed for the community to use. A council spokeswoman in-

forms the Wainuiomata News the development will create a real community area for its residents. Mr Stallworth says the board will push for another public toilet to be built in Homedale Village. He says the vision would be to have tour busses travelling through Wainuiomata towards the Rimutaka Forest Park to use it as a stop and allow visitors to browse local shops – with the long term goal of increasing tourism in the community. The location of the new facility at Hugh Sinclair Park will be opposite Caltex and in front of the skate park.

“Virtual exchange” set to grow in Hutt

inbriefnews Information helped with arrest Police in Hutt Valley last week arrested and charged a 17-year-old local man with the robbery of a Valley Flyer bus in Upper Hutt. The incident happened on Friday, March 14, and the offender appeared in the Hutt Valley District Court late last week. Detective sergeant Richard Orr expressed his thanks to members of the local community for the assistance provided which resulted in an early arrest.

By Dan Whitfield ‘Live Skype Windows’ have been installed in three locations around Lower Hutt to allow for cultural exchanges in real time. Hutt City Council has partnered with NEC New Zealand and sister city Minoh in Japan to create this experience for its residents and students of schools around the region. The creation of the project has taken the past two years to set up, with the last four weeks being used for testing the connections. Mayor Ray Wallace says the city’s relationship with Minoh encompasses a significant number of educational, business, cultural, sporting and council exchanges so it is wonderful to be able to add to that a digital exchange. “It’s a truly digital exchange...We’re definitely looking to expand it elsewhere around the city over the next couple of months,” Mr Wallace says. While no locations have been set up in Wainuiomata as of yet, Mr Wallace says it could be a possibility in the future. Wainuiomata High School has a number of exchange students attend each year, and the Lower Hutt mayor believes a good idea would be to open virtual exchanges up to them as well. “These students are gaining virtual class mates. It’s a fantastic opportunity and Hutt City is strongly supporting it to grow,” he says. The link was launched with a Skype-based

event between Lower Hutt Mayor Ray Wallace and the Mayor Kurata of Minoh. NEC New Zealand managing director Leonard Dench believes the conferencing technology is a “great opportunity” for students to engage with the sister schools every day and become virtual classmates. Skype is a tool the Hutt City Council has been pushing and is interested in improving over the next few years.

The links have been established between Epuni Primary School in Lower Hutt and Todoromi No Mori Gakuen in Minoh, as well as Tui Glen School in Stokes Valley and Saito No Oka Gakuen in Minoh. A Skype portal has also been set up in the Lower Hutt War Memorial Library which is connected to the Multicultural Centre in Minoh. Each of the schools will connect via the video system from Monday to Friday at midday. The library portal at this stage is available from 1pm to 8pm during the weekdays and, from 1pm to 4.30pm on the weekends. So far the project has had positive feedback with reports of joyful exchanges of language and laughter between the two cultures. Mr Wallace says the portals allow residents to share and exchange with their overseas counterparts. Hutt City also has sister city relationships with cities in Arizona, Texas and China. The council’s longstanding sister city relationship with Minoh began in 1995. NOTICE FOR PATIENTS

‘Balls to the wall’ will be the attitude for a local dodgeball tournament set to run this weekend. Everyone laughed and had a great time watching the movie Dodgeball; now give it a go for real at Hutt City’s first Dodgeball tournament. It is set to run this Saturday, March 29, at Walter Nash Stadium where the public have a chance to win prizes, listen to music and have a good time. Participants do not need experience. The cost to enter a team of six is $60 and while pre-registering at www.huttcitydodgeball.co.nz would be ideal, just turning up on the day is okay too, says a council spokesperson. The Hutt City Dodgeball tournament will run from 10am to 2pm.

Books wanted for Rotary

The children of Barnardos Kids Start Child Care in Wainuiomata got involved in a nationwide awareness day last week. Supporting fellow schoolmate Mia McCord, 2, almost every child wore odd socks as part of World Downe Syndrome Day. Last Friday marked the ninth anniversary of the awareness day that encourages people all over the world to choose activities and events to help raise awareness of what Downe syndrome is, what it means to have Downe syndrome, and how people with Downe syndrome play a vital role in people’s lives and communities. Barnardos teachers Lynda Lincoln and Sarah Jenner say it is only the second year taking part but both times so far they have had

The main reason the Wainuiomata child care supports the day is because of Mia. “It’s great to see the children supporting it,” Sarah says. Barnardos in Wainuiomata are set to continue this tradition and support Odd Sock Day each year. Students Kevin and Glen Jenner (4), and Tamara Williams, 3, were each wearing different socks on their last week. Whatuira is pleased with how it is working with members of the Wainuiomata and Hutt Valley communities, with work actually making a difference in people’s lives. The mental health service offers its current 15 client base opportunities to get active, socialise and learn to become better people. Ms Whatuira says those involved are also taken to zumba and gym sessions, and a number of them have also recently completed a healthy eating and cooking course. “It really helps to change them. People really, really enjoy the programmes and enjoy getting out of the house from whatever they would normally have been doing,” she says. There are two services that Ms Whatuira runs for Wainuiomata and Hutt Valley residents one being the mental health service and the other, a diabetes and healthy living service. Monty Toko, a member of the service in the local community, believes what is offered to him is “more focused” and a way to get out of old habbits. Awhi Milner, also a member, says she really enjoys getting involved in the different activities that gets her out of the house.

Graduate focused on future of rebuilding By Dan Whitfield

APPRENTICE: Wainuiomata’s Sean Ryan. Photo: Dan Whitfield

Although Sean Ryan finished his studies in November, he is excited for his graduation next month and what the remainder of the year has to offer in terms of work experience. The soon-to-be graduate studied a level two and three carpentry course at the WelTec campus in Lower Hutt over the past few years. “I’m very excited to graduate. Carpentry is something I’m good at and love doing,” Sean says. After completing his studies in November, Sean found offers of employment coming

Do you know your neighbour? An initiative has been started around Wellington suburbs and towns, encouraging members of the public to get to know their neighbours this year. While Wainuiomata residents have recently been able to nominate their neighbours for the community’s good neighbour award, they are also being urged to know who they are and what

their contact details are. Supported by Absolutely Positively Wellington, Wellington Region Emergency Management and Neighbourhood Support New Zealand, the initiative has been set up to help people deal with the impacts of an emergency – whether it is power cuts, water outages, road closures, or major disasters.

from a number of directions however, decided to pursue further his understanding of the industry, securing an apprenticeship position at David Hale Building in Wellington. Going from studying last year to working full time, Sean’s days are now varied. One day Sean says he could be plastering a wall and putting up gib boards, another day he could be doing something completely different. While Sean was studying he was working at Hammer Hardware in Wainuiomata, which he says really helped him out. As part of his apprenticeship

level four qualification, Sean attends night classes during the week. The 19-year-old’s goal for the next few years is to complete his apprenticeship and become fully qualified, so he can head to Christchurch and help with rebuilding houses. An event that inspired Sean to follow a career in carpentry was helping his granddad build a deck. Another was helping his dad build a wall and general renovations around the home when he was younger. “It’s fun. It doesn’t feel like a job because I love doing it,” Sean says. Born and raised in Wainuio-

mata, Sean went to Arakura School, Wainuiomata intermediate and college prior to attending WelTec. The possibility of one day owning his own building company is still on the cards but, he would still help with the hands on building side of things. “I definitely want to go to Christchurch and help out down there.” The thing the Wainuiomata resident really enjoys about the job is “seeing it a project completed from start to finish.” Sean’s experience includes helping build a house as part of his final year of education.

Support needed The Red Puppy Appeal will run over March 28 and 29 this year and, along with Wellingtonians, the Wainuiomata community has been asked to support. Organised by the Blind Foundation, the appeal week is an annual event that funds puppies to be trained to become guide dogs. There are a number of ways people can get behind this year’s appeal, including donating online today, becoming a coordinator or collector, as well as picking up your own guide dog soft toy from the nearest Animates pet store. A spokesperson from the foundation says these puppies are born to change lives and

Petone stadium a feasible option Dear Ed, I was at the debate the Hutt City Council had on the proposed Petone arena and there was lot opposition, and support for it. sides like the Wellington Phoenix. The area of amateur sport is coming to an end and sport is entertainment at those levels. I can remember the days you could go to Athletic Park and watch the rugby, it was cheap. One of the speakers I was impressed with. He spoke about how rugby league in the area had lost its home ground.

He supported the Petone Arena but believed Hutt City Council could gift Wainuiomata Wise Park to become the rugby league home. Regional rugby league is more an amateur sport perhaps, but Hutt City Council could do this rather than looking after the corporate cowboys. Sincerely, Mike Grigg

GREAT DEEDS: Neighbourhood Support coordinator Dawn McKinley with a box of nominations for Wainuiomata’s best neighbour. PHOTO: Jessy Edwards.

Heartwarming neighbour nominations received By Jessy Edwards From helping an injured neighbour in the early hours of the morning, to sharing food, looking after pets or simply bringing in the bins, Wainuiomata is celebrating its good neighbours. Forty-six nominations for the Wainuiomata Good Neighbour Award have been received, with entries now closed. Mayor Ray Wallace, who will be presenting the award, says the large number of nominations was expected and Wainuiomata is a very close-knit community where

people go that extra mile for each other. The award was organised by Neighbourhood Support coordinator Dawn McKinley, who wanted to move the focus off crime and on to the positive aspects of community life. “Neighbourhood Support is not just about crime - it’s about neighbours supporting each other in other ways too,” she says. She found reading the nominations a heartwarming experience. Although nominations showed it is often the little things that count, others showed some people go

further to make their street a great place to live. One nomination was from a person who had fractured their back. It told of a neighbour who came over at 2am and stayed till the paramedics arrived. Wainuiomata is the first place in the Hutt Valley to run this competition. McKinley hopes the award will spread to other suburbs, and be run again next year. Representatives from the support group, police, and local council will judge the entries. The winner will be announced on April 3.

MINUTES WITH: Paul Butcher Professionals Redcoats Real Estate Salesperson What is your favourite food?

Your favoured holiday destination?

Who would you invite to dinner?

It depends on the time of year. Summer would mean anything cooked on a barbeque. Winter would be a slow cooked cassoulet (a French style stew with white beans, pork belly, duck & rabbit).

Anywhere with my wife (to be) and my step daughter, that has warm weather, a large pool, no cell phone coverage and drinks with little umbrellas.

Both of my granddad’s. Ricky Gervais, Anthony Bourdan, All of the Beatles, and some of the playboy bunnies, just to even out the numbers.

What makes you smile? My god daughter’s; they are both at that very cute age of repeating anything you say, and making it funny.

A saying you like to live by? Don’t see the hole, see the bagel.

What’s next on your wish list?

What’s your favourite music?

Take my girls on holiday to somewhere we have never been before.

I was bought up in a house with music always playing, from Elton John to Fleetwood mac to Pink Floyd. I suppose my favourite music is whatever I’m listening too at the moment, and that is the new Arctic Monkey’s album, who know’s what it will be next week.

What is one thing Wainuiomata News readers would be surprised to know about you? Before I came into real estate I was a professional chef for 17 years.

Big support for principal’s shave By Dan Whitfield St Claudine Thevenet School principal Sue Jury braved the clippers last week and had her hair shaved off for charity. The principal of 24 years took part in this year’s Shave for a

Cure movement to support two special members of the school and community. Mrs Jury shaved her hair in support of student Zariah Kahui-Riddler and teacher Lyn Topp, as well as the Child Cancer Foundation in general. Mrs Topp is a foundation teacher at the school and works with so many children each year. Mrs Jury says she is a valuable member of staff. Zariah, on the other hand, is a new entrant student that is currently in Wellington Hospital having further treatment. Shave week this year ran from March 17 to 23. Shave for a Cure happened on Friday with hundreds of

Kiwis around New Zealand showing their support. Members of the public are urged to get behind Mrs Jury’s shave, supporting those living with Leukaemia and blood cancer. She hopes to raise $2000 for the Child Cancer Foundation but, believes more than that could be raised following the amount of support she has already received. Zariah and Wainuiomata resident Donna Larsen were in charge of shaving Mrs Jury’s head on Friday. Following the head shaving, Mrs Topp thanked Mrs Jury through a very emotional and touching speech for supporting the cause.

The shave took place on the school’s grounds on Rata Street. To support the Child Cancer Foundation, head to www.shaveforacure.co.nz. Alternatively, become a shave, help the foundation recruit and fundraise or simply donate somebody’s a shave. NATIONAL FUNDRAISING:  So far Shave for a Cure has raised just over $902,000 nationally, and the figure is continuing to climb.  Just over 1,900 people have shaved their heads to support the six kiwis who are diagnosed with a blood cancer or similar condition everyday.

Schools come together for culture By Dan Whitfield

Wainuiomata Primary School students and their counterparts from Fernlea School came together last Friday to indulge in a cultural experience. About 50 students from each school attended the kapa haka programme which ran from Waiuiomata Primary School. Led by kapa haka mentor Louana Fruean, the programme gave students the chance to sing and perform a number of Maori songs and dances. The interschool, mini cultural exchange also allowed students to socialise and meet new school mates, as well as learning kapa haka. The programme is set to continue and create opportunities for more cultural events between the two schools.

Consultation over proposed stadium to start in April The community will be heard on a proposal put forward by the Community Facilities Trust to bring a 12,000 capacity boutique community stadium to Petone Recreation Ground during Hutt City Council’s draft annual plan consultation, starting in April. At a full council meeting last week, Lower Hutt Mayor Ray Wallace and councillors voted unanimously to consult on the proposal through a special consultative procedure as part of the plan. Council was asked for a $25

million contribution towards the proposed stadium earlier this year, which Mayor Ray Wallace described as “hugely significant”. He says this proposal represents great opportunities for the city but there are also community concerns. “As a financially prudent council with an excellent track record of keeping rates low and meeting debt targets it is important we do due diligence, our homework, before we commit to any investment of this kind,”

Mr Wallace says. No provision has been made in Hutt City Council’s budget for this proposal as yet however, given the significance of this decision, there is no need to rush things, the Lower Hutt mayor says. “It is vital that before any commitment is made we hear from our community and more detailed investigation is undertaken to ensure any decision made is the best ones for our city and its people,” he says. If the proposal to build the

Grants to support local children Wainuiomata-based schools, kindergartens and daycare centres have had the chance to nominate children for financial assistance through grants of up to $5000. The grants are part of OfficeMax New Zealand’s Max e Grants programme which has been providing children from the age of four to 18 with support and encouraging their educational potential since 2011. The programme initially began in Australia with more than $600,000(AUD) in grants already given out. Grants can be used to fund such things as uniforms, school supplies and equipment, books, sporting equipment, as well as extracurricular activities. Applications closed on March 24.

new stadium was to advance, Hutt Valley residents, including those in Wainuiomata, would rates per annum increase by one per cent. This would be above any inflationary increase and amendments to council’s debt targets. “I encourage all those passionate about our city’s future to get involved in this discussion, come along to public meetings, ask questions, make a submission and have their say,” Mr Wallace says.

By Dan Whitfield Wainuiomata Fire Station’s open day is just 11 days away and even more entertainment has been squeezed into the line up. With a line up of emergency services including the New Zealand Fire, Police and Defence Force as well as demonstrations from the bomb disposal unit, the open day is also set to feature a helicopter coming on the day – bringing along a fire fighting monsoon bucket. Staff at the station are still hoping for about 1000 people to attend and get an insight into what the local service is all about – as well as increasing its membership by about eight people. A colouring-in competition for children will also run on the day as well.

Station officer Sandy Dalgety says currently the Wainuiomata fire service has 40 volunteers however, more are needed to cover day shifts. While people do not have to be a super-human to join, volunteers do need to be able to pass a medical and police check, as well as be relatively fit - but full training is provided. Currently the station needs people to cover day shifts - 9am to 3pm. The open day will be held on March 29 from 10am-3pm at the Wainuiomata Fire Station, Fitzherbert Rd. Other activities on the day will include CPR training, kitchen fire demonstrations, motor vehicle extrication displays and a hose running competition.

Inter-generational day of games The Tutake Kaha syndicate at Pukeatua Primary School recently held a fun event for both Tamariki and Whanau in the community. Teachers of the year one to three children spent several lessons instructing the children in a range of old style games - including hopscotch and marbles. The event ran on Friday, March 7, with families invited to join in. Dubbed Intergenerational Games, it meant children and families were able to

play games their parents or grandparents may have played when they were at school. Pukeatua’s event coincided with National Children’s Day which was held the first Sunday in March. The theme of the event was a focus on identity. This gave children an opportunity to search and find out who they are within their family group and also to discover what it was like for their parents to have been a child many years ago.

Innovation that excites

News it brings a smile to his face every time he starts or drives it. “I got the car two months after driving Paul’s one…In about November. After driving his I just had to get one,” he says. Minus the aftermarket wheels and different exhaust, Glen’s corvette is almost entirely stock standard. The exhaust has to be one of the party pieces of the Wainuiomatabased American classic – sounding perfect with its V8 rumble. “When you get the chance to put your foot down, it sounds great and goes even better,” he

says. While his corvette has the power many cars lack, Glen says it can be used as a daily drive but is currently only used every now and then for weekend cruises. At this stage, there are no plans to change or modify the corvette in terms of power. However, he would like to insulate the interior to make it a little more sound proof at some stage, as well as tidy up a few minor cosmetic details inside the car. “The car doesn’t need beefing up. It has got plenty of power.” The corvette is not the only

collectable Glen owns. He also owns a vintage Jaguar that was recently used to transport his now wife to their wedding. Glen’s dream car would have to be another American V8 – “There’s no doubt about that.” He says a nice Dodge Charger would be nice. “You buy these kinds of cars for the shape…The ones that look the best.” The Chevrolet and Jaguar are Glen’s first two collectable cars he has owned. He also attends car rallies and expos with his father-in-law.

Why Armstrong Nissan?

After driving his father-in-laws Chevrolet Corvette, Glen Ryan just had to have one for himself. “It was so fun to drive and I really liked it, so I got one,” he says. Glen’s car is a 1984 Chevrolet Corvette that is powered by a truly American 5.7 litre V8 engine. It stands out from the crowd with its red paint job and single white speed strip down the middle. Also helping the American beauty turn heads is its chrome wheels. The Homedale resident has only owned the car for about four months but tells the Wainuiomata

undertaken by GWRC indicates the Wainuiomata Stream which drains the Moores Valley area is likely to be the main source of contamination. “The tests have shown that the pollution is a mixture of both human and animal faeces,” Mr Pepper says. “We are working with [the regional council] to investigate sources of the contamination in the Moores Valley area including septic tank discharges and stock access to streams. In the meantime, we advise people wanting to swim in the area to go further upstream to the swimming holes in the Wainuiomata Recreation Area,” he says. HCC will provide further information to the public regarding the quality of water and safety of swimming at this site when it becomes available.

Local residents have yet again been urged to stay clear of the Wainuiomata River at Richard Prouse Park. Hutt City Council (HCC), Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC) and Regional Public Health confirmed on Tuesday that regular water quality monitoring undertaken in the area showed that counts of the bacteria Escherichia coli - also called E. Coli - exceeded the national guideline for safe swimming on a number of occasions during the past month. Health warning signs have been in place at the site since early March, as contact with this water could result in illnesses such as diarrhoea and vomiting, as well as infections of skin, eyes, ear, nose or throat. HCC manager for environmental inspections John Pepper says additional specialist testing

Labour MP Jacinda Ardern has a goal to improve the wellbeing of children around the country, which is why she is promoting her party’s best start package in the Hutt Valley today. As the party’s spokesperson for children, Ms Ardern’s plan is to help ease pressure on working, middle income New Zealand families by investing in the early years of a child’s life. The Labour-led package will allegedly help boost early childhood education, increase other education initiatives and introduce more paid parental leave. It will also offer support towards expectant parents. Ms Ardern says it can no longer be denied that radical action is needed on child poverty and child abuse in New Zealand.

She and several other MPs will be at Paparakau-Tuarua Te Kohanga Reo in Lower Hutt, from 10.15am to 10.45am. The package will allegedly help to make sure every child in New Zealand is born into an environment of opportunity.

Local sports star to represent NZ By Dan Whitfield A well-known Wainuiomata sporting personality has secured her spot in goal for a New Zealand-ranked hockey team. Whitney Morgan, a long-time Homedale resident, was selected for New Zealand’s over 35s masters hockey team after successfully representing a Wellington team at the National Masters Hockey Tournament earlier in March. Both a men and women’s team was selected as a result of the Wellington-based tournament. The two teams will head to the Hawke’s Bay to compete in Hockey New Zealand’s Affiliates Tournament at the end of this month. The New Zealand representative role comes as a little bit of a surprise for Whitney as this is will be her second season playing in goal and her third year back in the sport since she was younger. “This is my first time representing New Zealand. It felt big at the

Another competition completed

national tournament...It’s going to an even bigger experience playing in this tournament,” Whitney says. “The level of players will be a lot different than I have been used to. It will be such a great opportunity to improve though,” she says. Although currently playing for Petone Hockey Club, Whitney calls Wainuiomata home; after being here since she was 10-years-old. She is a committee member for Wainuiomata’s club. She plays in the goal keeper position but has in the past excelled in centre forward and wing spots on the turf. “This is going to be brilliant. I’m so excited to play for a New Zealand team...I can’t wait to play,” Whitney says. Prior to this opportunity, her biggest tournament was the national competition earlier this month; and prior to that, she had only played at club level. Leading up to the Hawke’s Bay tournament in the coming week, Whitney will continue training,

doing regular exercise, jumping in goal for Wainuiomata High School players at practices, as well as club training on Tuesday and Sundays. Hockey has always been a sport Whitney has enjoyed. Attending Wainuiomata’s old Parkway College, Whitney used to play for her school however, gave it up. Fifteen years later, she found herself picking up a hockey stick once again, realising her skills on the turf had not left her. “I’ve always been doing something, some sport. I used to play touch and league...But got back into hockey for my daughter,” she says. Whitney’s team at the Wellington-based tournament in early march won the tournament overall. She is coached by Deryck Humphries, a goal keeper for the New Zealand masters 55s team. “I would not have made the New Zealand team had it not been for him and Leon Mitchell [a Petone Hockey Club coach] pushing me.”

New turf for club opened

Samantha Beckett completed her third Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon on Sunday. The 12-year-old raced against competitors from around the region in her specific age group – cycling, running and biking around a course set up in Kilbirnie. Samantha’s first attempt at the competition that has become a rite of passage for many Kiwi children was in 2012. Wainuiomata’s Jack Payne, 11, also took part in this year’s event. The triathlon has been running for 22 years.

Upgrades to Wainuiomata Hockey Club’s training facility have been completed. An official opening was held recently to mark the complete re-surfacing of the club’s training grounds - located at Wainuiomata High School. The turf was opened by opened by Wainuiomata Hockey Club president Lena Simmonds and former Black Stick Niniwa Roberts. A spokesperson from the club says a big thank you goes out to

everyone who joined the club in celebrating the opening and that it was a mark in history for the Wainuiomata community. A group of more than 50 people, including family, friends and supporters turned up on the day. It was opened on March 15.

Hurricanes come to Wainuiomata for sign up By Dan Whitfield New members who registered to play for Wainuiomata Rugby Club this year had a chance to meet three rugby stars from the Hurricanes recently. Hurricanes first five-eighth Beauden Barrett, halfback Chris Smylie and loose forward Adam Hill were in attendance at the club’s Meet a Hurricane Registration Night – which was a huge hit with the kids. Young Wainuiomata residents Tony Foley and Kieran Foley have signed up for this season; with Tony playing for the under 12s and Kieran part of the under 10s team. The club’s Penney Foley tells the Wainuiomata News over 180 Wainuiomata children have registered so far, with 50 of them registering online.

“We will be holding our final junior registration day this Saturday at the Wainuiomata mall, however children can still register with us throughout the season by coming into the club on Friday nights,” Ms Foley says. The Wainuiomata under 85kg team is still looking for more players ahead of this year’s season and Mr Millar encourages those keen to have a run this year in a social but serious grade, to come down and chat to coaches.  For more information, visit the club’s website www.sportsground.co.nz/ wainuiomatarugby

inbriefsports Big events come to local greens Wainuiomata Bowling Club has several major events coming up over the next few weeks. Starting this Thursday, March 27 and running to March 29, the locally-based club will be hosting the National Intercentre finals for men and women, with Wainuiomata players representing on the greens. The following weekend, April 5-6, the club’s most popular annual event - the Warren Te Paa Junior Classic Tournament - will run;

and on April 12 and 13, players from Wainuiomata will be competing in the Wellington Centre Triples Champion of Champions playoffs. President Marie Walsh says: “As you can see it will be a busy time for us, with large number top bowlers from far and wide on our greens.” For more information on the upcoming events, contact Marie Walsh on 04 564 6756.

New club sponsor Wainuiomata Rugby League Club will this year welcome a new sponsor when its season kicks off early next month. The It’s not OK campaign, a community-driven effort to reduce family violence in New Zealand, will this year be a major sponsor of the club’s senior team. The campaign’s vision is a community where each person believes there is something they can do to help and is likely to act

when they know violence is happening; and its goal is to change attitudes and behaviour that tolerate any kind of family violence. It was launched in September 2007 with the simple message Family Violence is not OK but It is OK to Ask for Help. A club spokesman says it is a big deal to have a large sponsor like this on board. The rugby league season is set to officially kick off on April 5.

Young basketball player Vegas bound By Dan Whitfield A young Wainuiomata basketball player has made it through to a national under 13 team set to compete in America later this year. Ezekiel Stallworth, 11, made it through recent New Zealand Basketball Academy trials, achieving his goal to secure a place on the team that will play at a tournament in Las Vegas. Training started back in December for Ezekiel. “Hard work and training through the Christmas holidays with some other boys who are going from Hoop Club [was part of the regime],” Ezekiel says. He was also part of an under 11 squad from the Hutt Valley that attended the National Maori Basketball Tournament over

Waitangi weekend. Ezekiel’s team secured first place, defeating Rotorua in the finals, 78 – 18. The Wainuiomata student is excited about the opportunity that has been presented to him, saying it potentially means he could be seen by coaches from American organisations and maybe finding a scholarship. To be selected for the team set to head to Las Vegas, the young player had to play against boys from all over New Zealand. “It’s awesome and I am really happy to be going,” Ezekiel says. The tournament is set to run throughout July, with games running from July 20-30. Ezekiel will also indulge in some overseas shopping and looks forward to going down the Las Vegas strip to see all the sights while in America.

Another win for Whitaker By Dan Whitfield Wainuiomata’s representative rider was on form for the third round of the KTM New Zealand Enduro Championships over the weekend. Held at the Riverhead Forest near Auckland, Jake Whitaker managed to secure another class win after pushing his bike to the limit through the weekend’s races. Riding his Husqvarna, he was sharing the lead in the under-300cc four-stroke class with fellow rider Freddie MilfordCottam leading up to the recent round. “I was happy to take another class win, [finishing] 6th overall. [I’m] focusing now on round four where I can hopefully show some more improvement and extend my class lead,” Whitaker says. The local rider says the track conditions were really good, apart from a bit of dust due to it being so dry. “[This] made it a little bit dodgy on the fast bits of the course,” he says. Aucklander Chris Birch is in the running to win this season once again however, spectators have now turned their interest to what is happening towards the back of the line up with riders such as Whitaker. The series now heads to Christchurch for round four on April 5. Round five will be held at Oparau on April 19 and Waimiha, in the King Country, will host round six-of-six on May 10.

Hard work pays off for Wainui teams By Jessy Edwards It was third time lucky for the Wainuiomata Women’s Major B Softball team as they finally beat their long-time rivals 7-1 in the Hutt Valley final on Saturday. Wainuiomata played Lower Hutt’s Steelers for the trophy in each of the past two years, losing both times. Co-coach Glen Wright was

over the moon at the win. “It was a very slow start, but we had one good innings and we never looked back,” Wright says. Wainuiomata sped ahead in the fourth innings to take six runs, with the Steelers sitting on one. It was 7-1 in the final innings, with Wainuiomata fielding. Wright watched on nervously with victory just three outs away. The final play - what seemed

like a slow-motion catch in the left-outfield - cemented the win. Pitcher and captain Olivia Rawiri says the victory was about getting the fundamentals right. “We played our basics and as a team, and we came out on top,” she says. With the team consistently making the final, and taking wins of up to 17-3 this season,

they have a solid foundation for moving up a grade. Two Wainuiomata men’s teams played off at Fraser Park in the presidents grade. The Presidents played the Natives, who ran away with the game in the top of the fifth innings with seven runs. The final score ended up being a 10-0 win. This is the second year they have won the grade.
